Broken Smartphone or Black Screen: Can You Still Recover Photos and Messages?

A broken or black screen almost never means that your photos and messages are lost. In the vast majority of cases, the phone's memory is intact: it is the screen, or a part around it, that is at fault. The real challenge is therefore not the data itself, but being able to power the device back on and unlock it to access that data. Two reflexes matter above all: don't keep stubbornly trying to turn it on, and above all never forget your unlock code, without which even a lab is often helpless.

The following text explains what really happens when a screen breaks, why modern encryption has changed everything, and how far a lab can go.

Broken screen, phone that vibrates: what it means

The scenario is a classic one. After a fall, the screen is broken or stays black. You put the phone on to charge, it seems to charge and gets warm, and when you try to turn it on, it vibrates. This behaviour is rather reassuring: it most often indicates that the phone is still alive, and that it is the screen that is damaged.

One important exception: if the phone has been in water, do not put it on to charge and do not pile up attempts, at the risk of making the damage worse. A device that has suffered liquid damage must be opened very quickly to be dried and to have its battery disconnected, so that it does not cause further damage. This is a special case, which we cover in a dedicated article.

For a "dry" breakage, you have to understand that a broken screen is not lost data. The screen contains electronics. When it cracks, a short circuit can damage this electronic part of the screen, and a simple replacement is then often enough to recover everything. Sometimes it is even simpler: the connector linking the screen to the circuit board has come loose, and reconnecting it immediately restores access to a working phone. But these incidents have a downside: a short circuit or a disconnection can also spread to the main circuit board, the motherboard, and there the problem becomes more complex. That is why, at the lab, we test each component before taking action.

The screen, a three-layer sandwich

To understand display faults, you have to know that a smartphone screen is not a single part, but a stack, a bit like a sandwich.

At the very bottom is the backlight, which provides the light. Above it, the display layer, which forms the image. And on top, the touch layer, which detects your fingers. Each can fail independently, and the symptom changes depending on which layer is affected.

Working out which of these layers is at fault is part of the diagnosis, and it determines the repair. A cracked screen that no longer displays anything and a screen that displays but no longer responds to the finger are not the same job.

Why you have to be able to unlock the phone

Here is a point that many people are unaware of: to recover your data, we have to be able to unlock your phone. It is only once the device is unlocked that we can connect to it and access its contents. But you don't unlock a phone blindly: you need a working screen.

This is where the lab work comes in. On some models, the screen can be tested independently of the circuit board. Often, you need a donor screen, taken from an identical device, to test or replace the faulty screen and restore access. We therefore use a donor screen, or we order the appropriate part.

A note of methodical caution remains. If the screen has been heavily damaged, the motherboard may have been too. So you have to test under the right conditions, with the right tools, so as not to make the situation worse. That is precisely what distinguishes a properly equipped lab from an improvised repairer.

The real wall: encryption

Up to this point, everything seems repairable. That is without counting encryption, which has transformed data recovery on smartphones.

On a modern phone, all the data on the memory chip is encrypted. Just a few years ago, this made no difference to us: you could desolder the memory chip and read its contents directly, a technique called chip-off. That era is over. Today, we absolutely need a phone that is at least partially functional, with at minimum the screen, the controller and the memory chip able to communicate with one another.

On very recent devices, a dedicated chip manages the entire encryption. And that is where the prognosis can tip over: if this chip is not functional, even if everything else works perfectly, it becomes impossible to recover the data, because the decryption key is permanently lost along with it.

This is also why chip-off has become useless on recent phones. We can still read memory chips, but the data they contain is encrypted by the processor, and without the key, what we extract is not usable. Decrypting this data without the official keys would take years, even with large computing centres. On this point, a smartphone has nothing in common any more with an old hard drive that you simply had to open in order to read.

The unlock code: never lose it, don't force it

Since everything rests on the ability to unlock the device, your code, or password, becomes the key piece. It is the guarantor of the protection of your data: without it, it is impossible to bypass the lock, and therefore to access the contents. This applies to us as well. Entrusting your phone to a lab without providing the code means depriving us of the key that gets us in.

Without this code, access is difficult, if not impossible. There are indeed tools capable of bypassing certain security measures, but these are ultra-specialised, extremely expensive pieces of equipment, reserved for states and the police, and their success is never guaranteed. Suffice it to say that for a private individual, the code is irreplaceable.

Two pieces of advice follow from this. First, do not lose this password and memorise it carefully, because there is no going back. Changing it from time to time remains healthy for security, provided you memorise the new one. Second, if you have forgotten it, above all do not pile up attempts. Depending on the device's configuration, unsuccessful attempts trigger a lockout of several minutes, then of several hours, and on certain settings, the automatic and complete erasure of all the phone's data after a few errors. It is better to stop than to lose everything by persisting.

What the lab does, and a recent case

In concrete terms, we open the device, check the motherboard, test the screen and replace it if necessary with a donor screen or a new part, rework the damaged components by microsoldering, then turn the phone back on to carry out the extraction once the device is unlocked. The limit always remains the same: a motherboard or an encryption chip that is too damaged means a lost key, and therefore inaccessible data.

A recent example shows just how misleading the diagnosis can be. We received a phone that vibrated but displayed nothing. It seemed to work, but the screen stayed black. We opened it, checked the motherboard, which appeared to be fine, then replaced the screen with a new one. On restart, the same symptoms. We took the investigation further, first checking the display part, then the part that manages the backlight. There, we found a component that seemed functional but was no longer powering the backlight. Once the faulty components were replaced, the phone was ready for recovery. Another repairer, who had come before us, had nevertheless told the customer that his data was lost forever.

Frequently asked questions

Does a broken screen make you lose the phone's data?

No, most of the time. The memory and the data remain intact; it is the screen or a part around it that is damaged. A screen replacement, the rework of a component or simply reconnecting a connector are often enough to restore access.

Can you recover the photos from a phone that no longer turns on?

Often, yes, if it is a fault with the screen, the connector, the battery or a repairable component on the motherboard. A lab turns the device back on, then extracts the data once it is unlocked. Recovery becomes impossible if the encryption chip is destroyed.
