They had the revolutionary idea of creating an 8-inch hard disk drive that would provide acceptable performance without the need for a complete closed-loop servo system, thereby reducing costs and complexity.

In 2000, Quantum made the decision to sell its disk drive division to Maxtor. While some models were retained and marketed under the Maxtor brand, original Quantum disks are becoming increasingly rare in the market.
